Parents and guardians,
Huntsville City Schools has previously blocked viewing of the YouTube website on student devices. We are temporarily suspending restrictions on YouTube for students so it may be used for pertinent educational purposes. YouTube for education, YouTube EDU, will be available for students in grades K-8 and YouTube will be available for students in grades 9-12.
Please be advised that inappropriate content is available on YouTube and your student will no longer be blocked from viewing this content. Please monitor your student’s computer activity if you feel it is necessary.
When our school district returns to normal operations, we will again restrict YouTube on student devices.
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s “Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning” website:
“Technology ushers in fundamental structural changes that can be integral to achieving significant improvements in productivity. Used to support both teaching and learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand held devices; expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials; supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds 21st century skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning.”
In the fall of 2013, Huntsville City Schools made the move to an all-digital learning environment with 1:1 Windows laptops for all students grades 3-12 and iPads in Pre-K through 2nd grade. A wireless network provides all students at every school reliable and equitable access of digital material and resources. The shift has created educational opportunities that have impacted students in every grade. Examples of positive impacts include gains in student proficiency as measured by state and national assessments and increased graduation rates.
Digital Learning includes areas in the Information Technology (IT) Department with responsibilities including IT Networking, End-User Device Management, IT Help Desk support, and the Educational Technology Department.
